With only around twelve commercial wineries, the state of Wisconsin has a relatively small scale of wine production. Although the state has difficult growing conditions for traditional European grape varieties, wine-makers in Wisconsin have focused their efforts into a few well-suited grape varieties, as well as wines made from many different fruits that grow easily in the state. Some of the fruits commonly used for wines in Wisconsin are cherries, apples, and cranberries [Wisconsin is the largest cranberry producer in the US]. Some traditional wines found in Wisconsin are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer; but, the focus in Wisconsin is primarily the sweeter fruit-based wines.
Fun Fact: The first person to plant wine grapes in Wisconsin, Agoston Haraszthy, was also one of the founders of California’s wine industry.
