Wine grape vines were planted in Texas over a hundred years before planting occurred in states like California or Virginia. Like many other states, the earliest wine grapes were planted by missionaries for religious consumption. In Texas, Spanish missionaries were making wine in the El Paso area over 350 years ago. Though missionaries were the first to plant grapes in Texas, the origins of native vines in Texas go back thousands of years. Many different varietals can be found in Texas. Some examples, both common and less common are: Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay, Reisling, and Orange Muscat.
Fun Fact: The author of Foundations of American Grape Culture, T.V. Munson, notorious for his expertise on grapes and teaming up with the French to save their grapes from vine-destroying insects, was from Denison, Texas.
