Oregon wines are relatively young in the timeline of United States wine production. Though most of the country’s vineyards and wineries suffered greatly during prohibition, Oregon’s wine industry lagged behind other states in bringing wine production back into their economy. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the wine business picked back up with the introduction of the Pinot Noir grapes. This new variety later became the state’s signature wine. In fact, it was Pinot Noir that gained Oregon its first international recognition in the 1979 Wine Olympics. The other most popular varieties in the state are: Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Merlot and Riesling. Despite Oregon’s wine production infancy, the rapid growth of wine production in the state has become a major factor in the state’s economy; out-of-state tourists are responsible for over half of the visits made to Oregon wineries.

Fun Fact: Every year, 50 Oregon wineries pull together to put on a 3-day camp [the Oregon Pinot Camp] to go over the ins and outs of Oregon’s prized Pinot Noir.
