Though prohibition destroyed the wine industry for the entire United States, Missouri experienced an immense blow. Missouri did not begin to resurrect its wine industry until 1965, but before prohibition wiped out all but the St. Stainslaus Seminary winery (remaining open to create sacramental wines), the state was the second largest wine producing state in the country. As of 2003, the Cynthiana/Norton grape varietal became the state of Missouri’s official state grape. Among the most common Cynthiana/Norton grapes in Missouri, some other varieties found in the state are Concord, Catawba, and Seyval. Some more recent varietals are Carbernet Franc and Chardonnay.
Fun Fact: Missouri is home to Augusta, the first federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA) as of 1980.
