Of all the fifty United States, California is the leading producer of wine in the country, generating almost 90% of the country’s wine. With upward of 2500 wineries, the state of California is the 4th leading wine producer in the world. The most common wine varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel to name a few; however over 100 varieties of grapes populate the state. Familiar companies such as E&J Gallo and Franzia, located in Central Valley [region responsible for 75% of California’s grape production], are definite leaders in the sales market, but many small companies spread throughout the four major regions of California are responsible for some of the more trendy, rare and bizarre wines. In some respects, California is a leader in new, exciting wine production, but many wineries in the state have a passion for producing only the most classically flavored wines.
Fun Fact: In 1976 at the Judgment of Paris wine competition, California beat France in both the white and red categories.
