While it may not seem like the ideal location for making wine, Alaska actually produces many popular choices, especially in unique fruit, flower and vegetable wines, some of which actually rank quite well. A few of their vineyards also produce ice-wine, a wine made from grapes frozen while on the vine. Because of this, the wine is both very sweet while sharply acidic, giving it a refreshing taste and making it a popular dessert wine. There are also a number of different Alaskan barley wines that are brewed.
Fun Fact: The barley wines produced in Alaska are actually ales, but are called wines because when they originated in England in the 1900’s, they were comparable to wine in their high alcohol contents.
